How to get cited by ChatGPT

ChatGPT now answers questions your customers used to type into Google — and it names its sources. Here is the concrete path to becoming one of them.

Does ChatGPT actually cite sources?

Yes — ChatGPT Search and browsing-enabled answers quote and link external pages. When a user asks something current, ChatGPT retrieves live pages, synthesises an answer, and lists the sources it used. The job of GEO is to make your page one of those sources.

Step 1 — Let it in

ChatGPT cannot cite what it cannot fetch. In your robots.txt, allow OpenAI’s crawlers:

Step 2 — Make the answer liftable

Step 3 — Remove the ambiguity

Add structured data so the engine is certain what your page is and who published it — an Organization identity, plus Article, Product or FAQPage as appropriate. Then publish an llms.txt with a one-line suggested citation it can reuse verbatim.

Step 4 — Earn outside trust

ChatGPT leans on sources it already trusts. A single relevant Reddit thread, a Wikipedia reference, or a mention in a reputable publication can do more than a dozen pages of your own copy. Be genuinely useful where your audience already discusses the topic.

Step 5 — Verify and track
