Generative Engine Optimization: get quoted, not just ranked
GEO is the dark art of writing and structuring content so generative engines lift it into their answers — with your name attached. It is the citation-focused half of AI SEO.
What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is optimizing content so AI engines quote, summarise and cite it. Where classic SEO competes for a ranked link, GEO competes for a sentence inside the generated answer — the part users actually read before they ever scroll to the links.
A generative answer is assembled from many sources. The engine retrieves candidate passages, judges which are clearest and most trustworthy, then paraphrases or quotes them. GEO is the work of making your passage the one it picks.
GEO vs AI SEO vs LLMO
These terms overlap and people use them loosely. Here is the practical distinction we use:
| Term | Scope |
|---|---|
| AI SEO | The umbrella: everything that makes you visible to AI engines. |
| GEO | The citation layer: earning quotes inside generated answers. |
| LLMO | The model layer: how a specific LLM represents and recalls your brand. |
What actually earns citations
Original, attributable facts
Engines love numbers they can credit. A single original statistic — from a small survey, your own data, or a calculation nobody else has published — phrased as one quotable line gives the model something only you can be the source of.
Answer-first structure
Put the direct answer in the first one or two sentences, then support it. Generative engines reward passages that resolve the question immediately, the same shape that wins featured snippets and AI Overviews.
Clear definitions and comparisons
One-sentence “X is …” definitions and honest comparison tables are disproportionately quoted, because they map cleanly onto the questions people ask.
Structured data
Marking up your page with schema removes ambiguity about what the content is, which raises the chance it is parsed and reused correctly.
Trust signals
Named authors, citations to primary sources, and mentions on places engines trust (Reddit, Wikipedia, reputable press) all push your content up the “safe to quote” ranking.
How to measure GEO
GEO is not a vanity claim — it is measurable:
- Citation tracking: run your target prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude on a schedule and record when you appear.
- AI referral traffic: watch for visits from
chatgpt.com,perplexity.aiand similar referrers in analytics. - Crawler logs: confirm GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and OAI-SearchBot are fetching your pages.
Beware of brands that claim “cited by AI” with no evidence. Real GEO shows the prompt, the answer, the engine and the date. Saying you are cited is not the same as being cited.

Is GEO the same as AI SEO?
GEO is the citation-focused part of AI SEO. AI SEO is the umbrella; GEO concentrates specifically on earning quotes and references inside AI-generated answers.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Most AI engines pull from the same web index, so crawlability, helpful content and authority still matter. GEO adds a second scoreboard on top: how often a model names you.
How fast does GEO work?
Structural changes can be picked up in days to weeks; entity and authority gains compound over months. No tool or guide can guarantee citations.
