AI SEO: how to get found and cited by AI engines
AI SEO is the craft of making your site legible to the machines that now answer questions for your audience — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews — so you are not just ranked, but quoted as the source.
What is AI SEO?
AI SEO is the practice of optimizing a website so AI systems can find it, understand it, trust it and cite it. Traditional SEO earns you a ranked link a human clicks. AI SEO earns you a mention inside the answer itself — the sentence the model generates, often with your name and a link attached.
This matters because search behaviour has split. A growing share of questions are now answered by a generative engine that reads dozens of pages and synthesises one reply. If your page is not machine-readable, attributable and trusted, you are invisible in that reply — no matter how well you rank in the ten blue links beneath it.
AI SEO vs traditional SEO
| Dimension | Traditional SEO | AI SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a clickable link | Be quoted inside the answer |
| Unit of success | Position & CTR | Citations, mentions, brand recall |
| What wins | Keywords, links, speed | Quotable facts, entities, structured data, trust |
| Key files | robots.txt, sitemap.xml | + llms.txt, schema, /.well-known |
| Measurement | Rank trackers, Search Console | + AI referral traffic & citation tracking |
AI SEO does not replace classic SEO — it sits on top of it. Many ranking signals (crawlability, helpful content, authority) still apply, because most AI engines pull from the same web index. But AI SEO adds a second scoreboard: how often a model names you.
The five pillars of AI SEO
1. Crawlability & access
If you block the bots you want to cite you, nothing else matters. Allow the right crawlers, ship a clean sitemap, and make sure your most important content is in the HTML, not locked behind JavaScript. See llms.txt for the new machine-readable layer.
2. Entity clarity
Engines reason about entities, not strings. Tell them exactly who you are with consistent naming and an Organization schema linked across every page by one shared @id. This is how you become a “known” brand rather than an anonymous URL.
3. Quotable content
Models lift sentences they can attribute: original statistics, crisp definitions, direct answers, comparison tables. Write the one-line answer first, then support it. This is the heart of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
4. Authority & trust (E-E-A-T)
AI engines lean heavily on sources they already trust — Wikipedia, Reddit, established publications. Named authors, real credentials, and third-party mentions raise the odds a model treats you as quotable.
5. Measurement
You cannot improve what you do not watch. Track AI referral traffic, log file hits from AI crawlers, and the specific prompts where you do (or do not) appear.
How to start this week
- Audit access: confirm AI crawlers are allowed and your content renders without JavaScript.
- Publish a real llms.txt and an Organization + Product schema.
- Rewrite your top page so the answer is in the first two sentences, backed by one original, attributable statistic.
- Earn one mention on a source AI engines trust.
- Start tracking which AI engines send you traffic.

Is AI SEO different from traditional SEO?
It overlaps but adds new surfaces. Classic SEO targets ranked links; AI SEO also targets being quoted inside generated answers, which rewards quotable phrasing, structured data, entity clarity and trusted third-party mentions.
Do I need to block or allow AI bots?
If your goal is to be cited by AI, allow them. Blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and friends removes you from the exact answers you want to appear in. Allow access, then make the content worth quoting.
How long does AI SEO take?
Technical fixes (access, schema, llms.txt) can be picked up within days to weeks. Entity and authority work compounds over months. Nobody can guarantee positions or citations — treat any promise of guaranteed rankings as a red flag.
